Teaching that Science often Involves Making Inferences that are Based on Observed Circumstantial Evidence: “Mystery Boxes”

In this exercise, a set of small boxes is prepared that contain a moving ball, plus one or two barriers that are different for each box. Students manipulate these sealed “mystery boxes,” working in groups to determine the inner structure of their box.

The nature and sources of uncertainty inherent in the process of problem-solving are experienced. The uncertainty of their conclusions is reduced by student collaboration and scientific argumentation.
