Teaching that Science can Sometimes Produce a Major Change in How we View the World

In 1990, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) produced a landmark book promoting science literacy, Science for All Americans. Witten by James Rutherford and Andrew Algren, it includes chapters on the nature of science, the nature of technology and mathematics, as well as a section on scientific habits of mind.  

Chapter 10, entitled Historical Perspectives, concisely and clearly presents ten examples of major changes in scientific understandings that have profoundly affected humanity, beginning with “Displacing the Earth from the center of the universe.”
