Teaching How Scientists Determine the Safety of Medical Treatments through Clinical Trials

A collaboration between the InterAcademy Partnership and the Smithsonian Institute has developed a series of “community research guides” focusing on topics such as food, energy, mosquitoes, sustainable communities, and vaccines.

Specifically designed for students aged 11 to 18, these guides are accessible for free at https://ssec.si.edu/global-goals.

One of these guides, “Vaccines,” features 8 tasks for students, which include “Why are vaccines important?” and “How do we know vaccines work?”

Task 4 explores the question “How do we know vaccines are safe?” and introduces the concept of clinical trials.
